About the Cartoonist
Mike
is a self-taught artist whose interest in cartooning began
in Jackson, MS when he was the cartoonist for his high school
newspaper, the Forest Hill "Rebel Review". Upon
attending Hinds Community College where he studied Advertising
and Commercial Design, he was both the advertising artist
and cartoonist at the college newspaper, "The Hindsonian".
He won the top collegiate advertising artist & top cartoonist
awards in 1978 from the Mississippi Press Association. That
same year he was also awarded the national first place cartoonist
award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association in
New York.
After college, and a short stint as an advertising artist
at the Clarion Ledger in Jackson, MS, Mike moved on to become
the staff artist for the Hattiesburg American where along
with advertising design, feature story illustrations and
editorial cartoons, he created "SPORTSART"
featuring cartoons for Southern Miss, Mississippi State,
Ole Miss, Alabama and other universities across the south.
During football season, it was common to see his cartoons
taped to the windows of cars heading to games. After moving
back to Jackson, he worked for a local advertising agency
creating logos, specialty advertising artwork and T-shirt
designs. Mike is currently the editorial cartoonist for
the Jackson Free Press and available
for freelance work.
